Science Assessment for old and new

Here are some assessment materials I have made for the current and the new curriculum. As year groups are disapplied from the old curriculum schools  can begin to use the new curriculum and assessment materials, or whatever forms of assessment they choose. The DfE will eventually provide exemplars and a framework. Assessment for the whole curriculum will be narrative type assessment of where pupils are and what next rather than levels or grades. This is in line with Dylan Wiliams and Paul Blacks’ original idea of ‘comment only’ feedback! It might just work as it’s far better for pupils and parents to know what the children can do and what they need to do next rather than a grade or a number. ‘My child’s a level 3’ is pretty meaningless really! My overall feel is that the primary science curriculum has been simplified, yet most of the content remains with emphasis on core science enquiry skills progression through investigation. Remember all science knowledge is temporary anyway!!  Yikes!

Primary Science Curriculum Assessment Record 2014

Present NC Science Enquiry Assessment record

Year 1 Individual Pupil Science Assessment Record I will make up these for every year group soon ready for 2014 – this is a more AFL friendly approach to assessment than a whole class document for teachers to tick and pupils to never see. Also, in theory this type of sheet could be used for reporting to parents?

Any thoughts welcome please.

  1. Hi Beth, I was trying to find your e-mail address to ask you some questions about assessing Science, so I Googled you and ended up at your blog, and the first item on there was about assessing Science and included the documents I needed! Too easy.

Anyhoo, thanks for those, and for the INSET and… Haps New Year!

    1. Hi Greg

Happy New Year. I did send around an email to all attendees on the course, did you miss it? Or did I get your email wrong?
I think Lewisham are trying to set up Science Network meetings at John Ball so keep your eye out for them, I think we’re scheduled for the first one on
on March 12th. My email address is bbudden.209@lgflmail.org so please email me anytime. Hope you find the material useful – I’ve just finished
pupil assessment sheets for Year 2 -6 for the new curriculum and will upload them eventually – some people might find them useful. I think these kind
of shared assessment ladders are the way forward for the core subjects – we are starting to use them to report to parents too – makes life much easier than
writing long verbose reports that might not always be read in the detail!
      Anyway, stay in touch!
      Beth
